You have to make sure you listen to the instructions and watch the moves being performed carefully. You don’t actually have a trainer in the room with you so if you’re doing the moves wrong you could be doing your body some damage. As the workout is quite intense and you’re doing it every day, you can really notice results quickly which is a nice little motivation boost! Make sure you measure yourself pre-shred and after each level to monitor your progress. As Jillian says, ‘I want you to feel like you’re going to die!’ You feel it! Although it’s only 20 minutes long you really feel like you’ve worked hard. Try to do it first thing in the morning, that way it’s done and you can spend the rest of the day knowing you have achieved something. This means you can fit it into your day at any time without having to travel to the gym. You don’t have to leave the house and it only lasts 20 minutes. I’m not exactly ‘shredded’ as Jillian may have hoped but I’m enjoying my new found (baby) abs! I also feel a lot stronger and more body confident. It may be a placebo effect but knowing you’re putting the work in to achieve one less inch means you don’t worry so much about having that odd chocolate bar you’ve been craving all day! Here’s the much awaited before and after pictures in all their gruesome glory from the beginning of level 1 to the end of level 3. Results: I really didn’t expect to see results so quickly so this has come as a nice surprise! I’ve managed to lose a a good 2″ from my hips and waist and 1.5″ from my thighs which may not seem very much but I’m very happy about! I’m currently downloading the Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 program to continue with as the shred has given me the kick start I needed to motivate me to exercise daily. I enjoyed this level so much more than level 2, although there’s a lot of plyometric training (jump training to you and I) in this level which ended up hurting my knees quite a lot – rockstar jumps and jumping lunges, who invented you!? There’s a lot of arm work which I found quite hard, my arms and shoulders are no way as strong as my legs but as this level went on I struggled a lot less but still. This level was way more difficult than I expected. The moves in this were a little more difficult so I had to keep rewinding and try to copy (all very awkward when you’re in a plank position). By the end of it I had basically memorised the workout so could mute ol’ Jillian and blast my own music. The squats were a killer and I was aching for days but that’s how you know it’s working! I got a bit bored after a while and was keen to move onto the next level. I actually quite enjoyed this level, it’s a lot more cardio based than the others and was a nice way to get into the workout. However, this time I have some lovely pink dumbbells and have battled through the whole 30 days! I’ve tried this workout before but never stuck to it, I managed level 1 for about 3 days using whisky bottles as weights. The 30 day shred consists of 3 levels designed to improve and build your fitness through 20 minutes of circuit training – strength, cardio and abs. I also followed the shred up with the 30 day ab challenge which is free from the iTunes app store.

I’ve been drinking a lot more water and have swapped coffee for green tea which I’ve found has really helped my skin too. There’s also an eating plan that has been created to follow alongside the shred, but I chose not to use it as my diet is quite good anyway (we’ll bypass the late night chocolate trips). The program claims to help you lose up to 20lbs, but for me I mainly wanted something that would help me build muscle and tone up for my upcoming holiday. I had read a lot about the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred and seen some impressive results pictures (people love to Instagram their bods!). My main reason for never giving in to exercise DVDs is my sheer impatience of not seeing results quickly enough, but after trawling through many a before and after picture of people who have completed the program I wanted a piece of the action. I would never describe myself as a sporty person, in fact I will actively avoid any kind of sporting situation…but I do go to the gym regularly for spinning classes and weight training. I have succumbed to the world of exercise videos.
